Track every trade with precision.

A free Excel/Google Sheets trading journal that calculates your win rate, profit factor, risk-reward ratio, and equity curve automatically.

A trading journal template is a structured spreadsheet for recording every trade you take — entry, exit, position size, profit/loss, and notes. This free trading journal template ships as a trading journal excel template (.xls / .xlsx) and a Google Sheets copy, plus a PDF trading journal format for traders who prefer a printable version. It auto-calculates the key metrics you need to evaluate and improve your trading strategy. Maintaining a journal is the single most effective way to eliminate bad trading habits and find consistency in the markets.

The Math Behind the Tool

How the Formula Works

This free trading journal template ships as a trading journal excel template (.xls / .xlsx) and a Google Sheets copy, plus a PDF trading journal format for traders who prefer a printable version. Gross Profits:The sum of all profitable trades over a specific period.
Gross Losses:The absolute sum of all losing trades over the same period.

Formula Expression

Profit Factor = Gross Profits ÷ Gross Losses

Example Calculation

"If your winning trades generated $5,000 in total profit and your losing trades cost you $2,500 in total loss: Profit Factor = $5,000 ÷ $2,500 = 2.0. A profit factor above 1.5 is generally considered a highly viable trading strategy."

How to Use This Trading Journal Template

1

Download the Template

Click the download button to get the Excel (xls/xlsx) file or make a copy of the Google Sheets version. Both versions include identical functionality; a PDF trading journal format is also available for printing. Choose the platform that best fits your daily workflow.

2

Log Every Trade

Record your entry date/time, ticker, direction, entry price, exit price, stop loss, take profit, and position size for every trade you take. Consistent logging is crucial for building a statistically meaningful database of your trading activity.

3

Review Your Metrics Weekly

The dashboard tab auto-calculates win rate, profit factor, average R:R, max drawdown, and plots your equity curve. Review these weekly to identify patterns. Finding out which setups or days generate the most losses allows you to optimize your strategy.

4

Add Trade Notes

Use the notes column to record your reasoning for each trade, emotional state, and what you would do differently. This qualitative data is where real improvement happens, helping you identify psychological biases like FOMO or hesitation.
